Skin Condition: Oily Skin
The Problem: Oily Skin
Oily skin is a skin condition where the sebaceous glands (that secrete an oily, waxy matter) are overactive and produce excessive oil. Oil is good for your skin, but too much oil causes shiny, greasy complexion, acne, pimples, blackheads and large open pores. Oily skin’s large pores can trap bacteria, leading to more frequent acne and blemishes. Skin oil production actually increases during adolescence and begins to decrease as we age. However, hormonal imbalances during menopause or pregnancy can turn the oil production back on. Some people have a combination of oily skin in certain areas and dry skin in others. Oily skin ages slower than other types of skin.
Oily skin can be caused by diet, cosmetics, heredity, pregnancy, hormone levels, birth control pills and humidity and hot weather.

OILY SKIN FROM DIET
Certain foods trigger hormone signals that include an increase in blood sugar and a hormone called IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1). When this occurs, it triggers inflammation and the production of oil in the skin. Avoid dairy that is not organic (without hormones), fried or cooked oils, vegetable oil and excessive animal fats. Also avoid cold cereal, white pasta, white bread, dried fruit and pretzels. To flush out toxins and keep the skin hydrated, drink plenty of water. If you have oily skin, try to avoid sugar, salt, soda and junk food.
OILY SKIN FROM COSMETICS
Poor-quality cosmetics damage the skin due to harsh chemicals. Use makeup that is made with natural ingredients. Some makeup or skincare products can be too oily or too drying. The sebaceous glands respond by producing more oil. It’s best to find what SKIN TYPE you are and use skincare and makeup that is appropriate for your skin type. Find products that are non-comedogenic (do not clog pores).
OILY SKIN FROM HEREDITY
Large sebaceous glands can be passed down the family tree, so if your parents have oily skin, it is likely that you will too. Your genetics may also pass along the overproduction of androgen (male hormone), which affects oil production in the skin and a higher risk of prostate and breast cancer.

OILY SKIN FROM HORMONE LEVELS
Fluctuation in hormones due to puberty, menstruation, pregnancy or menopause stimulate an increase in sebum (oil) production in the skin. Extra hormones can also be released when a person is experiencing stress or illness.
OILY SKIN FROM WEATHER
Dry or cold climates cause dry skin. Sebaceous glands, responsible for oil in the skin, go into overdrive to compensate for dry skin. Hot weather, especially humid climates, stimulate sebaceous glands, leading to oily skin.
The Solution: Ultra Essence Skincare Products
It’s important to keep your skin very clean. But, people with oily skin need to be choosy about their cleansing products. Avoid products that contain harsh chemicals that strip your skin of its natural oils. When the skin becomes too dry, oil glands will overwork to compensate for the dryness. Avoid smoking since it promotes large pores and skin damage. After cleansing, use a natural moisturizer that is non-comedogenic (does not clog pores) and take the next step towards healthy, beautiful skin.
